Very rare, exclusive piece worth of a museum.
The bike´s History:
I purchased the frame new in 1985 from Freewheeling Bikes in Austin, Texas. I purchased the 50th Anniversary grouppo in 1983 at Chesini in Verona, Italy. A friend of mine who was a mechanic at Freewheeling Bikes assembled the bike in September, 1986. Because of the grouppo and the number of other bikes I had at the time, I mostly road the Masi Gran Criterium on Sunday club rides in Austin and San Francisco. It was my "special occasion" bike.
In 1989, I had the bike disassembled and the frame sent to Joe Bell in San Diego to be repainted. I had always stored the bike in a climate controlled "bike room" so there was no rust or corrosion but I think factory paint is mostly just OK but not great. I paid for Joe's best paint job which included a couple of clear coats over the decals. When the frame was returned it was completely reassembled with great care. At that time, no one thought I should ride it because was so amazingly restored. I road it a few times but at the same time got into mountain biking. The bikes has probably been ridden only 40 times total and only 5 or 6 times since it was repainted.
With the exception of re-gluing the tubular tires, the bike is ready to ride. The bike measures 60 cm from the center of the crank to top of the top tube. It measures 57.5 cm from the center of the seat tube to the center of the head tube. It is on Masi Registry: http://bhovey.com/Masi/MasiUSA.htm
